Camp Horizon Services for People with Disabilities

Disability servicesThe Up Center provides a variety of services for individuals with disabilities and their families.  Our staff and counselors work with children and adults, including financial management assistance, day support, canine assistance and more.  Please contact us directly if you have questions about any of the services and programs below.

Representative Payee Program
Our Representative Payee Program provides financial management to people with disabilities, including adults with mental illness or an intellectual disability. By paying bills and ensuring sufficient money to last throughout the month, we protect vulnerable individuals from being financially exploited and from becoming homeless.

Legal Custodians
The Legal Custodians program provides financial management to veterans with disabilities. The program allows The Up Center to become a veteran’s custodian, allowing the agency to manage benefits from the Department of Veterans Affairs if certain conditions are met.

Day Support Program
A newly renovated 5462-square foot facility on Tidewater Drive in Norfolk serves as the site for The Up Center's new day support program. This program provides a place for adults with moderate to severe disabilities to spend the day learning self care and communication skills, while also having fun doing art and other activities.

Canine AssistanceCanine Assistance
The Students’ Best Friend program takes place in a special education classroom at Booker T Washington High School. The program uses a trained Facility Dog from Canine Companions for Independence to help develop student skills ranging from social, speech and motor skills to the acquisition of science and other academic knowledge.

Therapeutic Recreation Consultation
This service is available to individuals who have a Medicaid Mental Retardation waiver or a Medicaid Developmental Disability waiver. The consultation helps clients learn how to discover and engage in meaningful leisure activities to increase independence and enhance quality of life. A recreational therapist assesses the individual's skills and interests, develops a support plan, and works with individuals and caregivers to make community connections and implement the plan.

Behavioral Consultations
A behavioral consultation helps evaluate individual actions and create a personalized plan to improve social interactions and maximize quality of life. This is a new and growing service at The Up Center. For more information or to make an appointment, please contact Patricia Coale at 757-965-8630.
