With over 140 years of service, The Up Center continues to provide critical support services that foster growth, stability, and independence. Each year, we strive to build a healthy community where children and families thrive.
In 2024, thanks to the support of our donors, partners, and dedicated staff, we impacted over 10,000 people through a variety of programs designed to meet the diverse needs of our community. We are proud to present highlights from our 2024 Annual Report, a testament to the unwavering commitment we have toward empowering individuals and families in South Hampton Roads.
Prevention
This year, our early childhood and maternal health services have empowered 262 parents and children, providing vital education and support that enhances development and school readiness. Through these efforts, we ensure that every child has the chance to succeed as soon as possible.
Our financial literacy programs have also made a significant impact, reaching 1,114 individuals who are now better equipped to manage their finances. On page six of the Annual Report, read how Ms. B’s story speaks volumes about the power of the Up Center’s financial counseling services. By raising her credit score, doubling her income, and reducing her debt, Ms. B is on the path to homeownership—a dream once out of reach but now within grasp.
Intervention
In times of crisis, immediate support can make all the difference. Our intervention services have offered timely, proven-to-work mental health counseling services to 1,453 individuals over the past year.
In the Annual Report, you can read more about Hope, a high school senior from the Suffolk and Western Tidewater region with abuse, neglect, and mental health challenges who sought therapy to cope with stress and issues at home. After receiving behavioral health care services through The Up Center, Hope stands resilient, having found stability at home and even achieved her goal of being accepted into college!
The Up Center’s efforts in housing stability have protected 59 families from eviction or foreclosure, ensuring they remain in safe and secure homes. Each of these efforts underscores our commitment to providing immediate, stabilizing support when needed most.
Mentorship and Foster Parenting
Through our mentorship and foster care programs, we matched 119 youth with caring mentors dedicated to guiding them toward success. To add to The Up Center’s list of successes in 2024, 96 percent of our foster care placements remain stable, proving the effectiveness of our approach in creating lasting change in the lives of children and families. There are over 1,000 children and teens in foster care in Eastern Virginia, with more in need of support. Discover if foster parenting is for you.
Support for Independence
We believe that everyone deserves the opportunity to live independently and with dignity. This year, our support services reached 1,256 people, including veterans and individuals with disabilities, offering skill development and community integration. Highlighted in the Annual Report, witness the bond created between George and his sponsor Tim, thanks to our Sponsored Homes program.
Through the Granting Freedom Accessibility Awards, we awarded 48 veterans financial support for home modifications, greatly enhancing their independence and quality of life.
