Mrs. F*, a client who is 83 years old and living on a fixed income, contacted The Up Center after learning that her home with a reverse mortgage was going into foreclosure. After mistakenly checking the deferral box instead of exemption on her yearly real estate tax exemption application, she feared that she owed over $6,000 in taxes.
One of our HUD Certified Counselors discovered that Mrs. F’s deficit was closer to $3,000. With the help of her daughter, together they were able to set up a repayment plan, allowing her to avoid foreclosure, get back on track with the mortgage company, and most importantly, stay in her home.
