Celebrating Parents as Teachers Day: Building Stronger Families from the Start
Every November 8, communities across the nation celebrate Parents as Teachers Day—a time to recognize parents, caregivers, and educators who work together to give children the strongest possible start in life.
At The Up Center, we’re proud to be part of this national effort through our Parents as Teachers (PAT) program. Rooted in the belief that parents are a child’s first and most influential teacher, our program connects families with trained home visitors who provide personalized support from pregnancy through kindergarten.
These visits help parents understand their child’s development, build positive relationships, and create nurturing home environments that promote lifelong learning. Families receive guidance on everything from early literacy to emotional growth, all backed by research showing that children in PAT programs are better prepared for school and display stronger social skills (Parents as Teachers National Center).
For families across Hampton Roads, The Up Center’s Parents as Teachers program offers more than education—it offers connection, hope, and community. Our home visitors walk alongside parents every step of the way, helping them celebrate milestones, overcome challenges, and build confidence in their parenting journey.
Through partnerships with local organizations, including the City of Norfolk, The Up Center ensures families have access to the tools and resources they need to thrive. Together, we’re strengthening the foundation for future generations and building a community where every child can reach their full potential.
