Building the Next Generation of Leaders

Many children in our community face barriers that make it difficult to thrive: family instability, poverty, trauma, and lack of consistent, caring adult relationships

What is Team Up?

At The Up Center, every child has the potential to lead. Every young person carries within them the spark of possibility — the ability to dream, achieve, and make a difference. But potential alone isn’t enough. Many children in our community face barriers that make it difficult to thrive: family instability, poverty, trauma, and lack of consistent, caring adult relationships. These challenges don’t define them — but without the right support, they can limit opportunity

That’s why your support of The Up Center’s Team Up Mentoring Program matters so deeply. When you donate to The Up Center to support mentoring, you invest in the adults of tomorrow, giving children the chance to become productive and successful adults.

The Challenge

Currently, more than 61 youth are on our Team Up Mentoring Program waitlist — children and teens across Hampton Roads who are waiting for someone to believe in them. These young people are eager to be matched with a caring, consistent adult mentor — someone who can listen, guide, and remind them that they matter. While they wait, we are not standing still. Our staff and volunteers are expanding our programming to reach youth even before formal mentor matches are made. Because every child deserves to feel seen, supported, and encouraged. Every child deserves the chance to discover their strength and shape their story. Your donation directly helps us do this. It fuels our capacity to bring evidence-based mentoring programs into schools, after-school programs, and communities where kids are facing the toughest odds. When you give, you’re not just giving money — you’re giving a child stability, confidence, and the belief that their life can take a positive turn.

The Leadership Institute: Building Skills While They Wait

Thanks to the generosity of donors like you, we’ve launched a powerful new initiative within Team Up: The Leadership Institute — a school-based, group mentoring program that helps students build life skills, resilience, and peer connections.
For example, at Elephant’s Fork Elementary School in Suffolk, a group of twelve fourth graders meets twice a month during lunch to explore leadership, emotional intelligence, and accountability. Referred by teachers for their promise – and the challenges they are navigating – these students are building confidence in a safe and inclusive space and learning to lead by example. Together, they explore what it means to be a leader — not just in theory, but in action. They share stories, practice new behaviors, and lift one another up.

Each session builds confidence in a safe, inclusive space where students are encouraged to lead by example. Teachers have noticed a difference: students are more engaged, more respectful, and more motivated to succeed. One student, overwhelmed by failing grades and missing assignments, shared her struggles with the group. Her peers listened, encouraged her, and helped her create a practical plan for getting back on track. Two weeks later, she proudly reported that she had turned in all her work — and raised her grade to a B! Another student, often disciplined for anger outbursts, began applying coping strategies he learned through group mentoring. Within weeks, his teachers noticed a transformation: fewer incidents, more focus, and a visible boost in confidence.

Nia's Story

When Nia joined Team Up, she was facing heartbreak no teenager should have to endure. Before turning seventeen, she had lost both of her parents and found herself starting over in a new city, living with her grandmother, and trying to finish high school while learning to navigate grief and change.

Despite the challenges, Nia refused to give up on her dreams. With encouragement from her mentor—who became a steady source of support and guidance—she found the strength to keep moving forward. Her mentor and the Team Up staff stood proudly in the audience this past June as Nia crossed the stage, graduating high school with honors.

The Power of Mentorship

A single mentoring relationship can change a child’s life. Research consistently shows that youth with mentors are:

  • 55% more likely to enroll in college
  • 78% more likely to volunteer regularly in their community
  • 45% more likely to hold leadership positions in school or extracurricular programs
  • And significantly less likely to engage in risky behaviors or drop out of school

Mentorship works. At The Up Center, we see this every day. It’s about connection, compassion, and consistency — the simple but profound power of being there for a young person.

When you donate to The Up Center to support mentoring programs, you make that connection possible. You help us train mentors, develop leadership curricula, and expand into more schools and neighborhoods where young people need trusted adults.

Our Vision For Growth

Our goal for the next two years is to double the reach of Team Up Mentoring — ensuring that every child on our waitlist has access to mentoring support, whether through one-on-one matches or through group-based initiatives like the Leadership Institute. To achieve this, we need to:

  • Recruit and train 100 new mentors from across Hampton Roads
  • Expand school-based group mentoring programs to five additional schools
  • Increase program staff capacity to support mentor matches and monitor progress
  • Provide year-round workshops on leadership, mental health, academic success, and and event opportunities to increase youth exposure

How your funds are used:

Each of these initiatives is only possible through your generosity. Every dollar makes an immediate and measurable difference. When you make a gift to The Up Center, you’re not just donating — you’re partnering with us to build a stronger, more connected community.

The Ripple Effect of Your Gift

The impact of your support extends far beyond a single student. When a young person learns to lead with empathy and confidence, they influence their peers, families, and communities. Mentorship creates a ripple effect that can shift the culture of entire schools. Teachers report fewer behavioral incidents. Parents see their children more engaged and hopeful. Mentors gain as much as they give, learning patience, perspective, and joy in helping a young person grow. Your donation doesn’t just change one life — it strengthens the fabric of our entire community.

Can I sponsor a student or school?

Absolutely. Donors can sponsor individual students, groups, or entire Leadership Institute programs at local schools. Sponsorship ensures consistent mentoring support and programming for students who need it most.

Who can become a mentor?

Anyone over the age of 20 who is committed, reliable, and excited about helping youth succeed can apply to be a mentor. Mentors undergo interviews, thorough background checks, training, and ongoing support to ensure they are prepared to guide their mentee effectively.

Can I volunteer without becoming a mentor?

Yes! We welcome volunteers to help with program events, community connections, and fundraising efforts. Every contribution of time makes a difference for the youth we serve.

How do you match mentors and mentees?

Matching is done carefully based on interests, personalities, and the specific needs of each student. Our goal is to create meaningful, lasting relationships that foster trust, growth, and leadership.

What ages do you serve?

Team Up serves youth from elementary through high school, focusing on students who face challenges at home, school, or in their community. Our school-based group mentoring programs are currently tailored for elementary and middle school students, but we are expanding to reach more age groups.

How does group mentoring work?

Group mentoring brings together small groups of students to learn skills like emotional intelligence, accountability, conflict resolution, and teamwork. It allows students to learn from their peers while also receiving guidance from a trained facilitator.

Accountability and Results

The Up Center has been serving the Hampton Roads community for more than 140 years, helping children and families overcome adversity and build brighter futures. Our programs are data-driven, trauma-informed, and grounded in measurable outcomes.

Every dollar you give is used efficiently and transparently to support mentoring and youth development. We track student progress, gather feedback from mentors and educators, and evaluate impact using consistent metrics.
